It is a tradition for all the boys in our family to serve our country after High School. My two older brothers joined the Marines while I chose the Army. I attended basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky and completed my tank crewman training there all at once. That experience was a defining moment in my life as it transitioned me from a boy to a man. I was stationed in Korea for Operation Team Spirit winter of 1986.
As a result of my serving in the military in a foreign country I learned the true value of how great our country is and that we are looked up to as an example for freedom around the world. I learned the value of teamwork and accountability in Korea! Our very lives depended on our ability to trust one another and work well as a team.
After my tour of duty, I used my veterans benefits to get certified in early childhood education and began a lifelong career in residential treatment of at risk and severely emotionally disturbed youth. I have since become a foster parent and have opened a nonprofit for residential group homes specializing in at risk youth.
